Oil Change FAQ’s—

The best way to know which type of oil is best for your car is to check the owner’s manual or contact a Garber Automall ASE-Certified Technician.

The simplest answer is this: your oil should be changed on a regular basis. Besides that, oil changes are specific to the vehicle and type of oil used. Some vehicles will need an oil change every 3,000 miles, while others can go up to 7,000 miles or more without needing one. As a rule of thumb, always refer to your owner’s manual for manufacturer guidelines on oil changes or consult with the ASE-Certified Technicians at Garber Automall.

In some cases, an oil change every 3,000 miles may be necessary, however, every vehicle is different. Assuming a 3,000-mile oil change is correct could end up costing you a lot of money that you don’t need to spend, depending on what is recommended for your specific vehicle. Instead, consult your owner’s manual or a Garber Automall ASE-Certified Technician for the best-fitting oil change increments.

To give a word of advice- don’t neglect oil changes. Over time, the effectiveness of motor oil diminishes and can lead to things such as oil sludge and corrosion, both of which are harmful to engines. As your vehicle goes longer and longer without an oil change, it will eventually lead to engine damage, leading to serious (and expensive) issues. Oil changes are one of the easiest and least costly vehicle services, so don’t wait for something to break down; take care of the small things.

There are some circumstances that may change the frequency at which your oil needs to be changed. If you regularly drive through conditions that are more strenuous on a car, you may need oil changes more often than other drivers. Some examples of this include: frequently driving through stop-and-go traffic, extreme temperatures, routine trips of only a few miles, or repeated heavy towing.

The fact that you cannot remember might be a good indicator that an oil change should be in the near future, but otherwise look for these signs:

  • Check the oil under the hood; if it is dark and has particles in it- it’s time for an oil change
  • If your engine is running rougher than usual, there’s a good chance it’s lacking lubrication from clean motor oil
  • A check engine or oil light has come on
  • The level of oil has decreased

Garber Automall takes pride in repairing all vehicle makes, models, and ages. Whether you purchased your car from us or another dealership, we are happy to help with your vehicle needs. If you have any questions or concerns about the service center at Garber Automall, feel free to call us at (904) 688-3183.

Everything you need to know about oil changes—

The majority of modern vehicles use multi-grade oil. This type of oil is effective in both hot and cold weather conditions, and will have a two-number rating system, such as: 10W-30.

All engine oil comes with a viscosity classification, which is the resistance to flow for that particular motor oil. With regards to the classification of multi-grade oil, the first number indicates flow when the oil is cold, also known as “winter” grade; the second number indicates the oil’s flow at hot temperatures. Viscosity is important because during an initial vehicle start-up, upper engine parts can rub against each other due to a small concentration of oil. Therefore, the lower the viscosity, the more quickly the oil will flow throughout the engine.

Synthetic oils are an alternative to traditional oils which are composed of chemically compounded lubricants. This type of oil allows for increased viscosity across an extended temperature range. Synthetic oils can also reduce oil thickening, minimize wear on the engine, and increase the load the vehicle is capable of handling.

A clean oil filter will stop foreign particles from getting into your engine’s parts, which helps maximize the oil’s effectiveness to keep your vehicle running smoothly.

The courtesy check that Garber Automall technicians perform is the most efficient way to provide preventative maintenance for your vehicle. We will do a thorough inspection of your vehicle and provide a written report that details approximately when any future maintenance should be completed- so you are left with no surprises.
