Chevrolet Corvette Vs. Nissan GT-R: Godzilla Takes on an American Legend

The Chevrolet Corvette is a legend in the sports-car arena, and its latest generation pushed it into a new realm of premium vehicle while maintaining its performance roots. A relative newcomer to this segment, the Nissan GT-R, which flies in the Corvette with its aggressive styling, Infiniti-level-luxury cabin, and insane performance credentials.

Which is the better sports car for our Jacksonville, Florida buyers? Continue reading to find out.

When you get into the world of high-powered sports cars, the designs car vary greatly, and that’s precisely the case with the 2019 Corvette Z06 and the 2019 GT-R. The Corvette takes on more traditional sports car looks with its low-slung roofline, aggressive angles, and long hood. The GT-R, however, lands more in the sports coupe realm with its higher roofline and less of a wedge-like design. Not to say the GT-R is toned-down in any way, but next to the Corvette, it doesn’t quite ooze a sports car vibe.

The GT-R fits a certain mold, and that’s the younger buyer looking for something that grabs attention. The GT-R and its unusual coupe-meets-sports-car looks will do just that. The Corvette, on the other hand, has a look the more established demographic shoots for.

The 2019 Corvette Z06 is 176.9 inches long, 73.9 inches wide, and 48.8 inches tall. This body sits atop a 106.7-inch wheelbase, and the whole assembly weighs in at 3,298 pounds. The GT-R is larger at 185.4 inches long, 74.6 inches wide, and 53.9 inches tall. It’s wheelbase checks in at 109.4 inches. With its larger body, the GT-R is a bit bloated at 3,915 pounds.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Corvette Z06

  • Smaller body is nimbler
  • Significant weight savings
  • Classic Corvette looks

Advantage: 2019 Nissan GT-R

  • Unique appearance that draws plenty of stares

The 2019 Corvette Z06 stepped up its game in interior styling its latest generation. Gone are the days of super-basic styling in this pricey sports car and in comes an era of premium upholstery, soft-touch materials, plenty of color options, and premium infotainment options. The latest Nissan GT-R went through much of the same changes, as its new dashboard boasts a more horizontal orientation and loads of soft-touch materials. Add in Alcantara and synthetic suede, and the GT-R borders on Infiniti levels of luxury.

In terms of size, neither of these sports cars are large on the inside as the Corvette Z06 is a two seater and the GT-R is barely a four-seater. The Corvette’s seats offer 38 inches of headroom, 43 inches of legroom, 55 inches of shoulder room, and 54 inches of hip room.

The Nissan GT-R’s front seats offer 38.1 inches of headroom, 44.6 inches of legroom, 54.3 inches of shoulder room, and 54.7 inches of hip room. While the 2019 GT-R technically has two rear seats, they are practically useless with just 33.5 inches of headroom, 26.4 inches of legroom, 50 inches of shoulder room, and 44.9 inches of hip room.

Cargo room is the last thing buyers will think about when shopping for the 2019 Corvette Z06 and 2019 Nissan GT-R, but the Corvette is surprisingly accommodating with 15 cubic feet of cargo space. The GT-R, however, has just 8.8 cubic feet. Maybe those tiny rear seats can double as grocery holders instead of people holders.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Corvette Z06

  • Sporty and luxurious interior
  • Not a penny was saved on premium upholstery
  • Clean and straightforward cabin
  • Sedan-like cargo capacity

Advantage: 2019 Nissan GT-R

  • Mix of high end materials adds luxurious feel
  • The most comfortable seats in the class
  • Logically placed shift paddles

Performance is where the 2019 GT-R and Corvette Z06 earn their keep. The Z06 comes powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 with 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a standard seven-speed manual transmission with rev-matching or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission.

The GT-R has two powertrain options. In its standard setup, it boasts a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine with 565 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a standard six-speed dual-clutch transmission and out to all four wheels. In the NISMO model, the power gets a boost to 600 ponies and 481 pound-feet of torque. This all routes through the same transmission and all-wheel-drive system.

The Corvette Z06 sprints to 60 mph in just 2.95 seconds, but that is 0.05 seconds (yes, just five-hundredths of a second) slower than the GT-R and GT-R NISMO. Handling is where the Corvette Z06 pulls away, as independent testing puts its skid-pad grip at 1.19 Gs to the standard GT-R’s 0.95 Gs. Moving up to the GT-R NISMO model pushes the skid-pad rating to 1.02 Gs.

Fuel economy is far from the first thing on a sports car buyer’s mind, but it can be a factor. The Corvette Z06 and GT-R are nearly identical in fuel-economy ratings, at up to 15 mpg city, 22 highway, and 18 combined for the Corvette Z06 and up to 16 mpg city, 22 highway, and 18 combined for the GT-R.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Corvette Z06

Advantage: 2019 Nissan GT-R

  • Slight acceleration advantage
