2018 Ford Expedition Shoots For the Stars and Gets 5 From NHTSA
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the all-new 2018 Ford Expedition a five-star overall vehicle score, making this full-size SUV a leader in safety. The Expedition is the only SUV in its class to receive a five-star overall vehicle score — the highest score — and Ford is proud to offer the best to its consumers. With the redesign, this SUV dropped pounds to make it easier to handle and increased safety with new materials.
Passenger safety starts with Expedition’s all-new fully boxed steel frame and high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body. With the new materials, this vehicle lost up to 325 pounds. The construction went beyond just poundage, though, as the updated frame lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity for enhanced stability and driving dynamics.
“As a father of four and longtime Expedition owner, safety was a top priority when engineering the entirely new Expedition,” said Andrew Kernahan, Ford Expedition chief program engineer. “We are proud of the many features Expedition offers today that help keep our customers safe on the road.”
Updated active safety features like cross-traffic alert, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, auto high beams and enhanced active-park assist, which promote greater driver confidence and control, complement the NHTSA rating. The standard LATCH offers peace of mind for growing families, and the sliding second-row seat moves without removing the child safety seat, giving passengers quick access to all three rows.
“With the changes we’ve made to Expedition, people will see a whole new product, an entirely different vehicle,” said Todd Hoevener, Expedition chief engineer. “We’ve created the ultimate vehicle experience for the driver and the ones that matter to him or her most. No more racing to try to get a good seat – every row is fully connected and comfortable, and there’s plenty of room for your gear.”
When it’s time to take the camper for a weekend away, the powerful and efficient new engine will rise to the occasion. The Expedition’s new 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission and produces up to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The two-wheel-drive Expedition gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, making it the most fuel-efficient SUV in its class. And for up to 9,300 pounds of towing capacity, choose the Expedition XLT, Limited, or Platinum trims with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package and confidently bring your toys wherever you go.
If you’re looking for off-road adventure, the FX4 Off-Road Package makes this the most off-road-capable Expedition ever. The package includes an electronic limited-slip rear differential, heavy-duty radiator, off-road-tuned shocks, all-terrain tires, seven skid plates, unique 18-inch Magnetic Metallic-painted cast-aluminum wheels, chrome running boards, FX4 badging and new rubber floor liners.
