2020 GMC Yukon Vs. 2020 Ford Expedition

Full-size SUVs like the 2020 GMC Yukon and the 2020 Ford Expedition have something to offer all the larger families in the Jacksonville area. Whether they need a tow vehicle, a family hauler, or something to haul your luggage to Orange Park, they can handle it all. Which is better for you, the 2020 Yukon or the 2020 Expedition? Find out below.

Exterior

The GMC Yukon went through its last redesign back in 2015, bringing in a sharp new front end with sweptback headlights. Though its front end took on a sharp new look, the rest of the 2020 Yukon’s body retained its upright body the model has long been known for. Beyond its upright shape, the Yukon also boasts a premium-looking Denali model with high-intensity-discharge headlights,  LED signature lighting, bright bodyside moldings, a unique grille, and 20-inch bright machined aluminum wheels.

The fourth-generation Ford Expedition debuted in 2018 with a new, more luxurious appearance. In 2020, it gains a new King Ranch model that adds an exclusive two-tone paint job, unique badges, and special wheels on top of a slew of interior updates.

The Yukon and Expedition have two size options to fit various buyers’ needs. The GMC Yukon has its standard size and the XL model, and the Expedition has its regular size and the longer MAX body. The Yukon’s regular body is 6.1 inches shorter than the Expedition, but its XL model is 2.5 inches longer than the Expedition Max. In most other measurements, except width, the Yukon is smaller than the Expedition.

Advantage: 2020 GMC Yukon

  •       Shorter regular-length model works better in traffic
  •       Striking frontend that stands out

Advantage: 2020 Ford Expedition

  •       More recent redesign
  •       Max model offers a roomy cabin in a smaller footprint

Interior

Inside, these truck-based SUVs boast truck-like cabins, but the Expedition’s dash takes it a step further with an upright instrument panel, chunky HVAC knobs, a thick steering wheel, and large heater vents. Though it has those truck-like looks, it also has plenty of premium goodies in its higher trims to look the part of a desirable SUV.

The 2020 Yukon also has a truck-based interior, but it has more shapeliness than the Expedition, giving it almost a sedan-like look. It also boasts some creative storage areas, including a PIN-protected cubby behind the standard 8-inch touchscreen.

In terms of standard interior features, the Yukon and Expedition are very similar. The Yukon’s standard goodies include an 8-inch high-resolution touchscreen, a nine-speaker Bose AM/FM/CD/SiriusXM/HD Radio audio system, Bluetooth with audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, a 10-way power driver’s seat, a four-way power passenger’s seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a 110-volt power outlet.

The Expedition’s list of standard interior equipment includes tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a rear cargo-management system, an eight-way power driver’s seat, a rotary shifter, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, Ford SYNC 3, SiriusXM, an 8-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker AM/FM/MP3 audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more.

While the 2020 Yukon has more fun tech features than the 2020 Expedition, the latter has tons more standard safety goodies, including automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning, hill-descent control, and hill-start assist.

Performance

The 2020 GMC Yukon’s engine lineup includes a pair of V-8 engines, starting with a 5.3-liter V-8 unit that cranks out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission and has standard rear-wheel or optional four-wheel drive. With this engine and the proper towing equipment, the 5.3-liter-equipped Yukon can tow up to 8,500 pounds.

The 2020 GMC Yukon also has an available 6.2-liter V-8 that comes standard in the Denali grade. This unit cranks out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque and pushes it through a 10-speed automatic transmission. With this engine, the Yukon is unexpectedly quick with a 6.1-second 0-to-60 time and can tow up to 8,400 pounds.

The Ford Expedition has just one engine, a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 that pounds out 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. This boosted V-6 runs its power through a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive or optional four-wheel drive for a 6.9-second 0-to-60 time. With the proper towing package equipped, the Expedition can tow up to a 9,300-pound trailer, blowing away most of its competition.

Who Should Buy the 2020 GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon offers more features for the money relative to the Expedition, making it a superior option to its Ford rival for buyers seeking the best value. It also boasts more front-seat room, making it an ideal choice for taller shoppers who need as much room as they can get. Also, those who prefer the steady power buildup that comes from a V-8 engine will find this only in the Yukon, as the Expedition has just a turbo V-6 engine.

Buyers who do a lot of towing and need to milk all the capacity they can will find what they need in the 2020 Expedition. Also families that do a lot of cargo hauling will appreciate the extra room in the Expedition, as will those who frequently use the third-row seats.
