2020 Ford Mustang Vs. 2020 Toyota GR Supra

By Justin Cupler | October 22nd, 2019

In today’s world of high-tech engines, there is tons of power to go around, especially in the sports car realm. Today, the Ford Mustang is more powerful than ever, and the Toyota Supra makes its return with insane straight-line speed. These levels of performance make choosing a sports car in the Jacksonville area tough.

Which is best for you, the more budget-friendly 2020 Ford Mustang or the all-new 2020 Toyota GR Supra? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra harks back to the last-generation Supra with its sloped nose and duck-tail rear spoiler, but it also pulls in plenty of modern styling all its own. It boasts bold headlights, bulging rear fenders, a pointed nose, a double-bubble roof for additional headroom, and much more to set it apart from the crowd and the BMW Z4 Toyota bases it on. While this look may be a little much for some buyers, fans of the Supra will find this over-the-top design the perfect fit.

The Ford Mustang also has a bold, retro-inspired look, but it has been around longer and become a common sight on the road. That doesn’t take away from its impressive appearance that includes stunning headlights with distinct LED signatures, sequential LED turn signals, and a sloping rear roofline. It also features exclusive design elements in its insane Shelby lineup, which includes the GT350, GT500, and GT350R.

In terms of size, the 2020 Toyota Supra is up to 17 inches shorter than the Mustang and just under 3 inches narrower, making it easier to park in tight spaces. It also weighs nearly 400 pounds less in some cases and rides 1.2 inches closer to the ground.

Advantage: 2020 Toyota GR Supra

  •       A unique look that’ll attract a crowd
  •       Smaller and easier to manage in traffic
  •       Slick-looking Launch Edition model

Advantage: 2020 Ford Mustang

  •       Part-muscle car, part-sports car
  •       Sequential turn signals add a unique look
  •       Shelby lineup brings in more style

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Toyota Supra’s sharp design tapers off a lot, as the cabin has a more toned-down look. Though it is still sporty, there are no wild curves or lines like the body has, making it look almost like a mainstream coupe. The only parts setting it off are the raise section on the driver’s side of the center console that closes off the cockpit a bit, the electric gear shifter, and the full-width air vents.

Despite being a relatively simple design, the 2020 Supra has plenty of standard features inside, including an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-way power driver’s seat with two-position memory, black Alcantara/leather-trimmed sport seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 205-watt, 10-speaker AM/FM audio system, a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, SiriusXM, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and more.

In the mix of all this standard equipment, though, there is no Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Buyers can get Apple CarPlay in the 3.0 Premium trim, but Android Auto remains off the table.

Inside, the 2020 Ford Mustang continues its retro-meets-modern design with a satin-metallic dash applique, round air vents, a three-spoke steering wheel with metallic posts and a circular center section, and more.

As for standard equipment, the Mustang is far simpler than the Supra, but it is also significantly less expensive. The 2020 Mustang’s standard interior features include a six-speaker audio system, a 4.2-inch non-touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, manual climate control, power windows and door locks, and other basics. Moving into the Premium trim, though, adds more tech, including an 8-inch touchscreen, SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, power driver’s seat, leather-trimmed seats, and more.

Passenger room is a definite win for the 2020 Ford Mustang, as it is a four-seat model, while the Supra is a two-seater. The Mustang’s front seats also have 2.9 inches more legroom, 1.9 inches more shoulder room, and 0.7 inches more hip room. The Supra beats the Mustang in headroom by 0.7 inches thanks to its double-bubble roof. The 2020 Mustang’s 13.5 cubic feet of cargo room also beats the Supra by 3.3 cubes.

Measurement 2020 Ford Mustang 2020 Toyota GR Supra Difference
Front headroom 37.6 inches 38.3 inches -0.7 inches

Rear legroom 29 inches
Rear shoulder room 52.2 inches
Rear hip room 47.4 inches

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Supra

  •       More standard tech
  •       Simple-looking cabin
  •       More headroom

Advantage: 2020 Ford Mustang

  •       Seats up to four
  •       Tons more front seat room
  •       Larger trunk
  •       Available Android Auto
  •       More features for the money

Performance

Performance is what the Mustang and Supra are all about. The Supra has just one powertrain option, and that’s a BMW-sourced 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine that cranks out 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the rear wheels. This powertrain adds up to a lightning-fast 4.1-second 0-to-60 time.

The 2020 Mustang has loads of powertrain options, starting with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that throws 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque through a standard six-speed manual or an optional 10-speed automatic transmission for a 5.3-second 0-to-60 sprint time. A high-output version of this engine adds 20 horsepower and drops the sprint time to 4.9 seconds with the manual and 4.5 seconds with the automatic transmission.

In the GT models, the 2020 Mustang uses a 5.0-liter V-8 with 460 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs the same transmission options as the four-cylinder model but delivers a 4.2-second 0-to-60 time with the manual and a sub-four-second sprint with the automatic. The BULLITT model bumps the output to 480 horses but comes with only the six-speed manual transmission. The BULLIT knocks the sprint time to four seconds.

In the Shelby GT350 and GT350R lies a 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V-8 that cranks out 526 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with a six-speed TREMEC manual transmission that ships power to the rear wheels for a 4.3-second 0-to-60 time in the GT350 and 3.9 seconds in the GT350R. The GT350R adds carbon-fiber wheels and aerodynamic-enhancing goodies to help it in the twisties,

The most potent Mustang is the GT500, which uses a supercharged version of the 5.2-liter engine that pumps out 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. This power flows through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and out to the rear wheels for a mid-three-second 0-to-60 time.
