2020 Ford Escape Vs. 2020 Honda CR-V

By Justin Cupler | July 15th, 2020

The Ford Escape and Honda CR-V are two models that helped shape the compact crossover segment into what it is today. In 2020, these small people haulers have gone through some changes, as the Escape is all-new and the CR-V gets a visual refresh. Which of these new compact crossovers is better for our Jacksonville area families? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2020 Honda CR-V and the 2020 Ford Escape have fresh looks, as the CR-V went through a light refresh this year, and the Escape is all-new. The CR-V’s update builds upon its 2017 redesign with a revised front end that boasts a bolder with its updated headlights, new grille, and reworked bumper. Overall, though, it continues with a look that is more refined than most others in its class, as it targets more-established buyers seeking a more upscale look and feel.

The 2020 Ford Escape is all-new, and its looks may be slightly familiar, as it takes a few design cues from the now-discontinued Ford Focus. These gleaned styling bits include its angled wraparound headlights, more aerodynamic nose, and short overhangs. This sportier look aligns the Escape better with a younger family looking to haul the kiddos in a more youthful-looking rig. Buyers seeking more sportiness can opt for the SE Sport Hybrid and get black mirrors, grille, rocker panels, and wheels to enhance its already sharp looks.

As a compact crossover, the 2020 Ford Escape must balance its features and prices carefully. In its base trim, the standard exterior features on the base S trim include 17-inch steel wheels with Sparkle Silver hubcaps, active grille shutters, molded-in-black door handles, bodyside cladding and rocker panels, black upper window trim and beltline molding, daytime running lights, dual chrome exhaust tips, a black grille, LED taillights, halogen headlights with auto on/off, power mirrors with molded-in-black caps, a body-color rear spoiler, molded-in-silver front and rear skid plates, variable-intermittent windshield wipers, a fixed-intermittent rear window wiper, and more.

The 2020 Honda CR-V’s standard features match the Escape’s closely, but it falls short with two-speed intermittent wipers. The CR-V makes up for its lower-grade standard wipers with standard 17-inch alloy wheels.

When looking at size, the 2020 CR-V is slightly longer and narrower than the Escape. The Escape’s shorter, wider body and 106.1-inch wheelbase show its sportier intentions, as it forces the wheels to the corners for enhanced grip.

  •       Sporty looks
  •       Even sportier SE Sport Hybrid model
  •       Sleek body

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Honda CR-V continues its upscale ways with a refined and toned-down cabin that again suits more established families. This is especially true in its higher trims that add in leather upholstery, wood trim, the larger touchscreen system, and more. That said, even in its base trim with simpler features, the CR-V’s over interior layout is calmer than most in this class.

The Ford Escape’s cabin turns away from its sportier exterior with an interior that better matches the refined look of the CR-V. Instead of featuring hard lines and curves that match its more outgoing exterior, this cabin focuses on horizontal lines that make it look roomier and more upscale. This only grows as you move into the higher trims that add premium materials and more technology.

As for standard features, the Escape’s cabin starts out relatively simple in its base S trim. Without ticking any option bozes, the Escape S comes with simple features like a 4.2-inch instrument panel screen, Ice Blue® instrument panel lighting, and outside temperature display, a rotary gear shifter, cloth seating, a six-way manual driver’s seat and four-way passenger’s seat, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, a tilt-and-telescoping urethane steering wheel, power windows with driver’s one-touch-down operation, power door locks, and the SYNC® infotainment system with a 4.2-inch screen.

There are a few more-desirable standard features in the Escape S, and these are its 4G LTE Wi-Fi® hotspot (data plan required), app-based remote ignition and parked-vehicle locator, two smart-charging USB ports, and the six-speaker standard audio system.

The 2020 Honda CR-V’s base LX trim matches most of the basic features in the Escape S, but adds a 5-inch infotainment screen, automatic climate control, and Pandora capability. The CR-V falls flat with its lack of standard Wi-Fi®, its limited USB ports, and the standard four-speaker audio system.

Buyers looking for roomy seating will find tiny differences in the CR-V and Escape, but the cargo areas are a different story. With the seats up, the CR-V has a 5.7-cubic-foot advantage over the Escape, but this advantage grows to over 10 cubes with the seats folded.

Performance

At the time of this writing, the 2020 Honda CR-V has a simple powertrain lineup that includes only a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 190 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a standard continuously variable transmission and sends the power to the front wheels or all four with optional all-wheel drive. This adds up to a 7.5-second 0-to-60 sprint and a 1,500-pound towing capacity.

Later in the 2020 model year, though, the CR-V will add a 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain that’ll boast 219 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. Specifics are still limited, but Honda aims for a 50% fuel-economy boost in the city relative to the standard CR-V, which would put it at 42 mpg.

The 2020 Ford Escape has a more robust powertrain lineup that starts with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that cranks out 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. This power heads through an eight-speed automatic transmission and out to the front or all four wheels for a 7.7-second 0-to-60 time.

Standard in the SE Sport Hybrid and Titanium models is a 2.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder with 198 horsepower. This engine pairs with an electronic CVT that ships the power to the front or all four wheels for an 8.7-second sprint time and up to 41 mpg combined.

Optional in the Titanium model is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive to deliver a surprising 5.7-second 0-to-60 sprint and a 3,500-pound towing capacity.

Later in 2020, the Escape will gain yet another powertrain option, a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid four-cylinder with 209 horsepower. There are no fuel economy or performance estimates available on this powertrain yet.
