2020 Chevrolet Traverse vs. 2020 Toyota Highlander

By Justin Cupler | September 2nd, 2020

Midsize three-row crossovers like the 2020 Chevy Traverse and 2020 Toyota Highlander offer loads of room and all the features the average family need. But they also must provide superior comfort. Which one of these spacious crossovers is best for our Jacksonville area shoppers? Find out here.

Exterior

The Chevy Traverse is still relatively young, as it went through its last redesign in 2018. This three-row crossover boasts a fairly upright glasshouse, giving it the looks of a traditional SUV. Its sheet metal, though, adds more character with its sharp body lines and flared wheel arches. Up front, the bold dual-port Chevy grille stands out nicely and is flanked by angular headlights. Around back, wraparound taillights carve deep into the quarter panels.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander is all-new, drawing inspiration from the earlier-redesigned Toyota RAV4. This new look brings in a more upright and angular style that makes the Highlander crossover look more like a traditional SUV. Adding to this is a dose of sportiness from its angular fog light housings, wraparound headlights and taillights, and character lines that start near the bottom of the doors and rises over the rear wheel wells.

If standing out in the crowd is your goal, the Highlander accomplishes that and more.

Breaking out the tape measure, the Travers measures 204.3 inches long, 78.6 inches wide, and 70.7 inches tall, which makes it 9.4 inches longer, 2.6 inches wider, and 2.6 inches taller than the Highlander.

As for standard exterior features, the 2020 Chevy Traverse comes with 18-inch bright-silver-painted aluminum wheels, automatic-on/off high-intensity-discharge headlights, black beltline moldings and rocker moldings, black-painted mirror caps, body-color door handles, intermittent windshield wipers and rear wiper, heated power mirrors, and LED daytime running lights and taillights.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander is similarly equipped. Its standard features include 18-inch painted alloy wheels, touch-to-lock/unlock on all four doors, body-color heated mirrors with power operation and integrated turn signals, LED reflector headlights and taillights, variable-intermittent windshield wipers, windshield wiper de-icer, rearview camera washer, rear privacy glass, molded-in-black grille with silver-painted surround, body-color door handles, a rear spoiler with LED stoplight, and low-gloss-black A-pillars.

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Highlander

  •       Smaller and easier to manage

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Chevy Traverse is exactly what any crossover buyer would expect. It lack any dramatic shapes or designs, making it an easy design to swallow for nearly any buyer. Its large, clear touchscreens may not be as big as those on the Highlander, but they have a trick up their sleeves. Enter a PIN, and they raise upward to expose a hidden storage area for valuables.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander has a far more bold interior design with its offset infotainment and HVAC section that houses up to a 12.3-inch touchscreen. It also has various levels to its dash that make things a little busy but add lots of storage room for smaller items.

As for roominess, the Traverse’s front seats offer more space in every key measurable. Moving to the second row, the Traverse offers more hip and shoulder room, but the Highlander gets a small win in legroom. In the third row, the Traverse shines, as its 38.2 inches of headroom and 33.5 inches of legroom beat the Highlander by 2.1 inches and 5.8 inches, respectively.

In the cargo area, the Traverse offers 23 cubic feet of space with the rear seats upright, 57.8 cubes with the third row folded, and 98.2 cubes with both rear rows folded. These beat the Highlander by 7 cubes, 9.4 cubes, and 13.9 cubes, respectively.

Inside, the 2020 Chevy Traverse is well-equipped with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot (data plan required), eight-passenger seating, active noise cancellation, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, OnStar®, premium cloth upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, and six USB ports (two front, two second-row, and two third-row).

The 2020 Toyota Highlander’s standard interior equipment includes power windows with one-touch up and down operation, tri-zone automatic climate control, power door locks, cloth seating, an eight-way power driver’s seat and four-way manual passenger’s seat, eight-passenger seating, four USB ports, Driver Easy Speak, a six-speaker AM/FM/SiriusXM® audio system, an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, Amazon Alexa, in-car Wi-Fi, and more.

Where the 2020 Toyota Highlander gets a big advantage over many in the class, the Traverse included, is its long list of standard active safety equipment. This includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high-beam headlights, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, road-sign assist, cyclist detection, and hill-start assist.

The Traverse has most of these safety features available, but they are at-cost options.

Performance

Powering the 2020 Chevy Traverse is a 3.6-liter V-6 with 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. This power heads through a nine-speed automatic transmission on its way to the front wheels or all four wheels.

This adds up to a 5,000-pound towing capacity and a 6.6-second 0-60 time.

The 2020 Highlanders uses a 3.5-liter V-6 that pumps out 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and also ships its power to the front or all four wheels.

All said, this powertrain helps the Highlander tow up to 5,000 pounds. There are no available0-60 tests yet.
