2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Vs. 2020 Ford Expedition

Recently, full-size SUVs have balanced their trucklike natures out with sifter rides, improved interiors, and enhanced features, giving them a great mixture of utility and carlike comfort. Exterior

Full-size SUVs are large workhorses, but this doesn’t mean they can’t be stylish too. The 2020 Chevy Tahoe and 2020 Ford Expedition are evidence of this.

The 2020 Chevy Tahoe went through its last redesign in 2015, which brought in a blockier design and a bolder, more upright front end. Helping balance the squared-off design are slick headlights that have winglike swoops that wrap around the fenders. That small detail keeps this full-size SUV looking like a family vehicle as opposed to a pickup truck with a cap on the back, which is this class resembled in its earlier years.

In its higher trims, the Tahoe also takes on a more premium look with its body-color moldings, polished 20-inch wheels, and high-intensity-discharge headlights.

The Ford  Expedition ditched its old duds and picked up a new suit back in 2018. This new design boasts a slightly rounded front end with a wide grille and C-shaped headlights. While the Expedition is anything but a swoopy design, it does have softer body lines than the Tahoe, which appeals to some buyers.

Like the Tahoe, the Expedition’s higher trim levels get pretty luxurious with large, shiny wheels and a chrome grille. Plus, the Expedition has an added wrinkle with its bespoke-looking King Ranch trim that features special badging and paint to set it apart.

As for standard features, the Chevy Tahoe’s exterior equipment includes 18-inch high-polish-finish aluminum wheels, active grille shutters, halogen projector-beam headlights, black roof-mounted rails, black assist steps, heated power mirrors, acoustic-laminated front glass, deep-tinted rear glass, rain-sensing wipers, and a variable-intermittent rear wiper.

The 2020 Ford Expedition’s standard exterior equipment is very similar to the Tahoe’s, but it lacks the standard projector-beam headlights and rain-sensing wipers. It makes up for these missing features with its standard fog lights and approach lighting. The Expedition also offers one option the Taho does not, and that is its MAX body, which is nearly 12 inches longer than the base model, giving it extra cargo room.

Even without the MAX option, the Expedition is over 6 inches longer than the Tahoe, which can make maneuvering this beast through traffic a bit of a challenge.

Interior

Inside, large SUVs have made huge strides in moving away from being softened pickup trucks to bringing in their own designs that are closer to a sedan than a pickup.

The 2020 Tahoe’s cabin boasts a swoopy dash with lots of changes in color to add depth. The center stack features a standard 8-inch touchscreen that lifts upward to reveal a PIN-protected storage area. Surrounding all this is a classy-looking satin-silver bezel that matches other accents throughout the vehicle, including on the steering wheel and the passenger’s side of the dash.  

Inside the Expedition is a far more truck-like dash that is upright and looks chiseled from rock. Some buyers may find this a little too much of a contrast from its softer outside, but others may actually prefer the contrast. Things soften up a bit as you move through the cabin thanks to its woodgrain trim on the center console and upscale leathers in higher trims.

Performance

The 2020 Chevy Tahoe is a throwback under the hood, as it continues using V-8 power while others downsize and add turbochargers. Under its hood, the Tahoe’s standard engine is a 5.3-liter V-8 with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This power flows through a six-speed automatic transmission and out to the rear wheels or through the optional four-wheel-drive system.

With the 5.3-liter engine, the Tahoe can sprint to 60 mph in a respectable 6.6 seconds and can tow up to 8,600 pounds.

In the Premier trim, Tahoe buyers can drop in a 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This adds up to a super-quick 5.7-second 0-to-60 time and an 8,400-pound towing capacity.  

The 2020 Ford Expedition is on-trend with its 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6 engine as the only option. This unit cranks out 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque and throws it through a 10-speed automatic transmission and out to the rear wheels as standard or all four with optional four-wheel drive. This adds up to a 6.2-second 0-to-60 time and an impressive 9,300-pound towing capacity.
