2020 Chevrolet Blazer Vs. 2020 Jeep Cherokee

By Justin Cupler | September 1st, 2020

The compact crossover segment is full to the brim with great options that range from wild to mild. On the wild side is the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer with its in-your-face styling. Somewhere in the middle of the pack is the Jeep Cherokee, which has a wild side in its Trailhawk trim. Which of these family-ready crossovers is better for our Green Cove Springs area shoppers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

When the Jeep Cherokee returned in 2014, it arrived with a striking look that included sleek body lines and stunning razor-thin LED headlights. It tempered its design a bit in 2019 with a refresh that replaced the wild headlights with more traditional ones, softening its overall design. This allowed it to cater to more buyers but also alienated those who loved its wild looks.

The Cherokee has a wrinkle in its design few in this class have with its Trailhawk model that includes rugged-looking wheels, an increased ride height, numerous skid plates, off-road tires, and a satin-black hood decal.

The 2020 Chevy Blazer boasts a wild look that sets it way apart from the class with its sharp body lines, razor-thin headlights, forward-leaning liftgate, striking taillight graphics, a bold dual-port grille, and much more. This stunning crossover stands out in a crowd in a big way, making it an excellent option for buyers who like the additional attention this rig will attract.

In terms of sizing, the Blazer sits between the compact and midsize classes, so it is over 8 inches longer than the Cherokee. It is also wider and has a longer wheelbase. This extra size makes the Cherokee easier to zip through traffic in.

As for standard features, the Blazer’s base L trim includes dual-outlet exhaust with circular bright tips, 18-inch bright-silver aluminum wheels, automatic-on and -off HID headlights, body-color door handles, body-color mirror caps, intermittent windshield wipers, power mirrors with heating elements, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, an intermittent rear wiper, upper active aero shutters, and more.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee’s standard features are similar to the Blazer’s, but it comes up short with 17-inch wheels. The Cherokee makes up for these smaller wheels with standard LED headlights in place of the Blazer’s HIDs. Otherwise, the features are practically identical, and the Jeep costs over $4,000 less.

Interior

Inside, the Chevy Blazer and Jeep Cherokee take different design angles.

The 2020 Blazer’s cabin takes on a bold look, much like its exterior. This cabin includes a striking dash with plenty of sharp angles, a “floating” infotainment screen, available contrast stitching, round air vents, available leather, and much more. This style gets even sharper in the RS trim that adds unique badges and bright trim and more.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee’s cabin is far more traditional than the Blazer’s and focuses more on luxury than sportiness. It boasts a sleek dash with soft lines and attractive bright trim work. It also boasts contrasting colors to add separation between its various sections. Add to that its available leather upholstery and large touchscreen, and the premium looks grow.

The Cherokee also boasts the Trailhawk model, which adds extra ruggedness inside, including all-weather floor mats, unique trim work, and more.

Standard features are essential to families looking at a crossover, and the 2020 Chevy Blazer has plenty of these. Its standard features list include four-way manual passenger’s seat, a six-way manual driver’s seat, a 4.2-inch color driver-information center, 4G LTE Wi-Fi® hotspot (data plan required), a six-speaker audio system, active noise cancellation, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, two rear charge-only USB ports (one Type-A and one Type-C), two front USB data ports (one Type-A and one Type-C), an 8-inch color touchscreen, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, illuminated vanity mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear carpeted floor mats, high-definition rearview camera, keyless open and ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, premium cloth seating, and much more.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee is significantly cheaper than the Blazer, and it shows its lower cost inside the cabin with its 1-inch-smaller touchscreen, urethane steering wheel, a smaller black-and-white driver-information center, and fewer USB ports. When you look dollar-for-dollar, though, the Cherokee and Blazer are about even with their standard features.

Seating room is very similar between these two models. The Blazer’s size makes a big difference in the cargo area, as it beats the Cherokee by nearly 5 cubic feet with the rear seats upright and almost 10 cubes with the rear seats lowered.

Performance

Crossover powertrain options are becoming more robust these days, and the 2020 Blazer has one of the fullest engine lineups in the class. It starts with a 193-horsepower 2.5-liter engine that pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. This delivers an 8.1-second 0-to-60 time and 1,500-pound towing capacity.

Standard on 2LT and 3LT trims is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 230 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine mates with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. There are no 0-to-60 tests with this engine yet, but it allows the Blazer to tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Optional in the 2LT and 3LT trims, and standard in the RS and Premier trims is a 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 308 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive for a 6.3-second 0-to-60 time and up to a 4,500-pound towing capacity with the optional towing package.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee also has a robust engine lineup that starts with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that comes standard on the Latitude through Limited trims and pumps out 180 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or four-wheel drive, resulting in a 10.5-second 0-to-60 time and a 2,000-pound towing capacity.

Optional on the Latitude through Limited trims and standard on the Upland, High Altitude. Trailhawk, Trailhawk Elite, and Overland is a 3.2-liter V-6 engine that produces 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with front-wheel drive. Buyers can also add one of two four-wheel-drive systems. With this engine, the Cherokee sprints to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and can tow up to 4,500 pounds with the optional towing package.

At the top of the Cherokee range is the optional 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that cranks out 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine is optional on all trims except the base Latitude and pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain option allows the Cherokee to sprint to 60 mph in just 7 seconds and to tow up to 4,000 pounds with the optional towing package.
