Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Vs. Toyota 4Runner

With crossovers taking over the industry, rugged SUVs have taken a back seat to them. That doesn’t mean they don’t have a place in the automotive realm. This is true with the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and 2019 Toyota 4Runner, which not only handle off-road driving with ease but can haul the whole family too. Find out which is better for your Orange Park area family below.

Exterior

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited underwent a full redesign in 2018. While it is great this legendary SUV retains its rugged styling, we wouldn’t fault you if you struggle to find what changed. To keep traditionalists happy, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has all the classic design cues it’s had for decades, but the new-generation model is wider and longer, and it features an all-new nose and lighting.

The Toyota 4Runner also boasts rugged, upright SUV styling, but that’s mostly because it hasn’t been through a redesign since 2010. Like the Wrangler, though, the 4Runner has its key demographic: families who love traveling off the beaten path.  It may not be as capable as the Wrangler with its lower ride height, but it is still plenty rugged.

Both models naturally look rugged in every trim level, but they also each have their own extra-rugged side. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has its Renegade trim that includes extra body cladding, unique wheels, and knobby tires, while the Toyota 4Runner boasts its TRD PRO package that includes a raised ride height, FOX shocks, and all-terrain tires.

The 4Runner stands out with a touch of class the Wrangler Unlimited lacks with its decked-out Limited and sharp Limited Nightshade Edition models.

Advantage: 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

  • Classic, blocky look
  • A unique look at each trim level
  • Smaller footprint makes it easier to handle

Advantage: Toyota 4Runner

  • More traditional SUV looks
  • Premium-looking Limited model

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited shows off a flat dash that oozes toughness with its easy-to-operate switches and knobs for various functions, circular gauges, a simple three-spoke steering wheel, and circular air vents. The Wrangler also shows off functional off-road readiness with its wash-out interior that allows you to simply hose off the floor after a day of playing in the mud.

The Wrangler Unlimited is not only about off-roading, as it also has plenty of upscale tech features. These include an available 8.4-inch infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 552-watt Bose audio system.

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner also features an upright dash, but it is not as flat as the Wrangler’s. Also, given its age, the 4Runner’s cabin is understandably dated with its four-spoke steering wheel, 6.1-inch touchscreen, and abundance of plastic. Where the 4Runner shines is in its luxury features, including ventilated front seats, premium leather upholstery, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, and more in its higher trims.

In terms of seating room, the 4Runner’s front seats offer more space, but the Wrangler Unlimited comes back with tons more second-row room. The 2019 4Runner takes seating a step further by offering an optional third row that expands its seating capacity to seven people, but the third row offers very little legroom, so you should only use it in a pinch.

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner’s longer body crushes the Wrangler in cargo room by up to 17.3 cubic feet.

Performance

Under their respective hoods, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner and 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited feature standard V-6 engines. The Wrangler rolls in with a 3.6-liter V-6 with 285 horsepower paired to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed unit. Four-wheel drive comes standard.

The 2019 Wrangler Unlimited has an added wrinkle with its optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that bangs out 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission and delivers up to 25 mpg highway, crushing the 4Runner’s 21 mpg peak.

Standard four-wheel drive is only part of what makes the Wrangler Unlimited such a great off-road rig. There are also various Dana axles, speed controls, several gear ratios, and tons more.

The 2019 4Runner uses a 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6 paired to a simple but effective five-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is available as an option, but the 4Runner lacks many of the off-road features the Wrangler offers, though its TRD PRO trim offers a higher ride height and speed controls.
