Pickup trucks have long been given passes in the world of safety as few people viewed them as family vehicles. In today’s world, pickups are becoming increasingly family-friendly, resulting in the IIHS — the independent safety authority — putting them on the same standards as passenger cars. Recently, the IIHS put pickups through the tough-to-pass passenger-side small-overlap test, and the 2019 Ford F-150 came out as the safest in its class.
The 2019 Ford F-150 was the only one of seven large pickups tested that aced the small-overlap test with a “Good” rating. There were two other pickups with “Good” ratings, but the F-150 only experienced 4.72 inches of cabin intrusion from the impact. The RAM 1500 and Nissan Titan also received “Good” ratings, but they had 9.05 and 11.02 inches of intrusion, respectively.
This mastery of the bang-up test gives the F-150 a full slate of “Good” scores in all crash tests, making it one of the safest pickup trucks available today. It even kills it in the front-crash-prevention test with a “Superior” rating when equipped with optional Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, which is included with the Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go package.
