Ford F-150 Vs Chevy Silverado 1500

By Justin Cupler | June 19th, 2019

Today’s pickup trucks are more than just cargo haulers, as many families use them as daily drivers too. This has led to the expansion of the segment to include rugged work-tuned pickups and more comfortable daily drivers. There are even outright luxury models for those who need something more upscale. The 2019 Ford F-150 and 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 hit all these marks and more for our Jacksonville area shoppers. Which one is best for you? Find out below.

Exterior

The Ford F-150 went through its last redesign in 2015, which brought in a brand-new look and lightweight tech, like an aluminum bed. The 2019 Ford F-150 features your traditional pickup truck look with its upright nose, bold two-bar grille, C-shaped headlights, and much more. The F-150 also features the Raptor variant that adds an aggressive look pulled straight from Baja series races. Want something more premium? The F-150 Limited boasts all the exterior goodies you need with chrome accents and 22-inch polished wheels.

The Chevy Silverado is all-new for 2019 and boasts a bold new look that stands out, especially in the higher trims. The Silverado’s nose includes a massive, flat grille with “CHEVROLET” stamped on it, split headlights, and sharp body-panel creases. In its upper trims, the Silverado gains LED headlights that add a new personality with their thin, angular design creating a striking look. While this sharp front end is eye-catching, it may not be what every truck buyer is seeking.

Buyers who want a more rugged pickup won’t find anything on the level of the
Raptor in the Silverado lineup, but they can opt for one of the two Trail Boss models that include knobby tires, a 2-inch lift, four-wheel drive, and much more.

In body size, the base Silverado is larger than the base F-150, but the F-150 maxes out 9.3 inches longer than the Silverado.

Performance

Both the 2019 F-150 and Silverado have an array of engine options, but each has its own standout powerplants that set it apart. The 2019 Silverado’s lineup starts with a 285-horsepower 4.3-liter V-8 engine and continues with a pair of 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 engines with differing fuel systems. This lineup tops out with a 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8. Stuffed in the middle of the lineup is a unique 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine with 310 horsepower. The latter engine is supposed to deliver V-6 performance and four-cylinder fuel economy, but it falls short with a 1 mpg deficiency in combined mileage next to the F-150’s base V-6.

The Ford F-150 rolls in with a similar engine lineup that starts with a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V-6 engine and includes a 5.0-liter V-8 with 395 horsepower. The F-150 sets itself apart with three twin-turbo V-6 engines, including a 325-horsepower 2.7-liter, a 375-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6, and a 450-horsepower high-output 3.5-liter V-6. Further distinguishing the F-150 is its 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 that delivers up to 440 pound-feet of torque and 30 mpg highway. The Silverado has its own diesel engine coming, but it will not be in full swing until 2020.

Towing is a big part of owning a pickup, and the Silverado has a 200-pound advantage when comparing its base V-6 against the F-150’s base engine. The F-150 quickly comes back to beat the Silverado in towing in all other powertrain combinations, peaking with a 1,000-pound max-towing advantage.
