Chrysler 300 Vs. Buick LaCrosse

Large sedans are perfect for families with older kids, but they also fit the needs of empty nesters looking for a roomy sedan to haul friends around in or just head out on a weekend getaway in Orange Park. The 2019 Chrysler 300 and 2019 Buick LaCrosse can handle these responsibilities and more, but which is the better choice for our Jacksonville area car shoppers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

Few new large sedans today are anywhere near as American as the Chrysler 300. It boasts the traditional three-box look with a flat nose, bold grille, and broad shoulder that underlined all American cars decades ago. This may not appeal to all buyers, but those with some love for nostalgia will appreciate its design.

If the 300 is distinctly American, the 2019 Buick Lacrosse is distinctly European with its rounded body and coupe-like rear glass. Being what some call a sub-luxury sedan, the 2019 Buick LaCrosse is decked out from its base trim through the range-topping Avenir model, but it lacks the luxury car panache. Still, its base model looks more premium than the base 300 thanks to its bright body accents and wheels.

In terms of size, the 2019 Chrysler 300 is larger in every dimension, which makes the LaCrosse easier to handle in tight spaces.

Measurement 2019 Chrysler 300 2019 Buick LaCrosse Difference
Length 198.6 inches 197.5 inches +1.1 inches
Width 75 inches 73.5 inches +1.5 inches
Height 58.5 to 59.2 inches 57.5 inches +1 to +1.7 inches
Wheelbase 120.2 inches 114.4 inches +5.8 inches
Ground Clearance 4.7 to 5 inches
Curb weight 4,013 to 4,380 pounds 3,490 to 3,840 pounds +523 to +540 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Chrysler 300

  • Classic good looks
  • Sporty take in the S and C trims
  • Distinctly American

Advantage: 2019 Buick LaCrosse

  • European swoopiness
  • Smaller footprint
  • More premium look in base model

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Chrysler 300’s retro feel continues with its simple, clean layout with limited buttons and knobs. Despite its simplicity, the 2019 300 still has plenty of features younger buyers desire, including the Uconnect 8.4-inch infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Plus, moving into the C and Limited trims piles on the premium features and materials, including Nappa leather and a two-tone “luxury” steering wheel.

The 2019 Buick LaCrosse’s cabin boasts a more wing-like dash, which is popular in the luxury segment. This gives the LaCrosse’s cabin a wider look that is enhanced by air vents flanking the touchscreen and the horizontal dash applique. When you move into the Avenir model, the LaCrosse tickles the luxury-car segment with its premium leather, electric gear shifter, and more.

Being a larger car, the 2019 Chrysler 300 has more interior space than the LaCrosse. It crushes the Buick in shoulder and hip room, and rear legroom.

Measurement 2019 Chrysler 300 2019 Buick LaCrosse Difference
Front headroom 36.9 to 38.6 inches 38.4 inches -1.5 to +0.2 inches
Front legroom 41.8 inches 42 inches -0.2 inches
Front shoulder room 59.5 inches 57.7 inches +1.8 inches
Front hip room 56.2 inches 54.8 inches +1.4 inches
Rear headroom 36.9 to 37.9 inches 37.2 inches -0.3 to +0.7 inches
Rear legroom 40.1 inches 38 inches +2.1 inches
Rear shoulder room 57.7 inches 56.6 inches +1.1 inches
Rear hip room 56.1 inches 55.1 inches +1 inch
Cargo room 16.3 cubic feet 14.3 to 15 cubic feet +1.3 to 2 cubic feet

Advantage: 2019 Chrysler 300

  • Wider seats
  • Toned-down interior
  • Lower-cost base model is still comfortable

Advantage: 2019 Cadillac XTS

  • Luxurious cabin from start to finish
  • More cargo room
  • Higher luxury ceiling

Performance

Large sedans generally come standard with V-6 engines, but the 2019 LaCrosse strays from this path with its base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and eAssist mild-hybrid system. This system pushes 194 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels.

There is also an optional 3.6-liter V-6 engine that pumps 310 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission. With the V-6 engine, buyers can pick from front- or all-wheel drive.

The Chrysler 300 boasts a standard 3.6-liter V-6 with up to 300 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque that heads through an eight-speed transmission on its way to the rear or all four wheels. There is also an optional 5.7-liter V-8 engine that pushes its output to 363 horses and 394 pound-feet of torque. The V-8 also pairs with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, but it is only available with rear-wheel drive.

The Chrysler 300 sprints to 60 mph in a respectable 6.3 to 6.5 seconds with its V-6 engine and 5.3 seconds with the V-8. The base LaCrosse is a ton slower at 7.8 seconds, but the V-6 model comes close to the 300 with the V-8 at 5.6 seconds. Though the LaCrosse is the slower of the two, its big advantage comes in fuel economy.
