Chevy Traverse Vs. Dodge Durango

The 2019 Chevy Traverse and 2019 Dodge Durango are crossovers, technically, but their rugged looks give them the appearance of SUVs. Underneath, though, their chassis offer the comfortable ride and agile handling of a sedan. While they share a lot, these crossovers have some differences that align them with different buyers in the Jacksonville area. Find out which one is better for you below.

Exterior

The Chevy Traverse is one of the mode SUV-looking crossovers on the market today with its upright body panels, defined shoulders, and bold grille. This is right up the ally of the traditional SUV buyers who is just converting to a crossover.

The Dodge Durango is also an SUV-like crossover thanks to its more rugged-looking body. In fact, the only thing keeping it from being a true SUV is its lack of a body-on-frame construction. Setting the Durango apart from the Traverse — and pretty much every other crossover — are its performance models, R/T and SRT, and their sporty-looking bodies.

In terms of sizing, the Traverse is larger in almost every dimension. The only areas where the Durango is larger is in height, ground clearance, and weight.

  • Larger footprint leaves more room inside
  • Newer design
  • Significantly lighter

Advantage: 2019 Dodge Durango

  • Looks like an SUV
  • Sporty touches on R/T and SRT models
  • More ground clearance

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Chevy Traverse has some SUV-like touches with its round HVAC knobs, vertical air vents, and upright dash. It also has some touches of luxury with slivers of leather on its dash and ventilated leather seats.

The Durango has a simpler cabin, but it is also reminiscent of the brand’s modern-day muscle cars with its three-spoke steering wheel, T-handle gear shifter, relatively feature-free dash, and liberal use of the color black. While it’s simple and sporty, the Durango Citadel Anodized Platinum trim hits the luxury mark with its premium leather seating, leather-wrapped dash with real stitching, and more.

Because of its larger body, the 2019 Traverse is larger in almost every seating measurable and cargo area. Plus, the Chevy comes standard with a third row, whereas the Durango’s third row is an option in its base SXT trim.

Performance

Crossovers generally offer limited performance, but the Chevy Traverse and Dodge Durango buck that trend. The 2019 Traverse’s standard 3.6-liter V-6 engine cranks out 310 horsepower and pushes it to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds. In the RS trim, it swaps in a 257-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-pot that zips it to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available with the V-6 engine.

The Durango takes performance to a new level in its upper trims, but starts modest with a 3.6-liter V-6 that pumps out up to 295 horsepower. This pushes the Durango to 60 mph in a respectable 7.4 seconds. In the R/T trim, which uses a 360-horsepower 5.7-liter V-8, things get exciting with its 6.2-second 0-to-60 sprint time. The SRT model drops in a 475-horsepower 6.4-liter V-8 that zips it to 60 mph in a neck-breaking 4.7 seconds.

Towing is not a huge deal in the crossover segment, but the Traverse is competent with a 5,000-pound rating with its V-6 engine. The Durango is a towing master with its 6,200-pound base towing capacity, 7,400-pound capacity with the 5.7-liter V-8, and 8,200-pound capacity with the 6.4-liter engine.
