Small crossovers come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. Two great examples of this variation are the 2019 Chevy Equinox and 2019 Jeep Compass. Both are small crossovers with ample interior room, but one is best for on-road journeys through the Green Cove Springs area, while the other is set up for trail bashing. Find out which is which and what one works best for your family below.
Exterior
The Chevy Equinox went through a huge redesign in 2018, bringing in a sharp, angular look that has spread throughout the crossover market. Sure, it was a little late to the party, but this new design made the Equinox look better than ever and even lighter than before. This design rolled into the 2019 Equinox unchanged.
Since its redesign in 2011, the Jeep Compass has carried a Grand Cherokee-inspired nose. In 2017, the Compass received another redesign that brought it in line with the most recent Grand Cherokee, giving it a classy outward appearance that looks dated but in a distinguished way. Helping set the Compass apart from the crowd is the higher-riding, off-road-ready Trailhawk model. This is no badge queen either, as the Compass Trailhawk has the ride height, undercarriage upgrades, and powertrain updates it needs for serious off-roading.
In terms of sizing, the Jeep Compass is significantly smaller than the Equinox, making it easier to handle in tight spots.

- Upscale Grand Cherokee-like front end
- Rugged-looking Trailhawk model
Interior
The 2019 Chevy Equinox’s cabin is just like anyone would expect a midrange crossover to look. It features a few swoops and curves to keep things lively and slight contrasts from the dash inserts, but it is overall a simple design. In some trims, the dash gets a seat-colored insert for a little extra flair.
The 2019 Jeep Compass boasts the typical Jeep crossover interior. It is simple, uses a lot of black, and looks like it belongs in a more rugged vehicle. To help ease the sea-of-black feeling that can arise in these simple cabins, the 2019 Compass also features colored accents to break up the monotony. And if you’re looking for even more style, the Trailhawk and Limited models have plenty.
When looking at standard features, the 2019 Chevy Equinox and 2019 Jeep Compass are surprisingly similar. They both come standard with 7-inch touchscreens, Bluetooth audio streaming, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a handful of USB charging ports, and more. The same goes as you move up the trim levels, but the Compass’ Trailhawk model adds an unmatched wrinkle to the comparison.

Performance
Under the skin, the 2019 Chevy Equinox has a trio of engine options, starting with a turbocharged 1.5-liter with 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. Up from there is a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-pot. Topping the range is a thrifty 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine that delivers 240 pound-feet of torque and 39 mpg highway. Respectively, these engines sprint the Equinox to 60 mph in 9.2, 7.2, and nine seconds
The 2019 Jeep Compass has only one engine option: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. There is one variation, and that’s the Latitude and higher trims all get automatic engine stop/start to help conserve fuel. With this engine, the Compass sprints to 60 mph in a not-so-hot 9.3 seconds and has nothing more powerful to compete with the Equinox’s 2.0-liter engine.
The Compass sets itself apart from most other crossovers with its Trailhawk model that adds off-road shocks, a 1-inch-higher ride height, four-wheel drive, hill-descent control, a 20-to-1 crawl ratio, and more. This makes it a legit off-roader, while the Equinox is a soft-roader at best.
