For buyers looking for more thriftiness, there is an optional 1.6-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that cranks out 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet a torque while delivering up to 48 mpg highway.

The Honda Civic’s powertrain options are more complex and include a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. Up from that is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 174 to 180 horsepower, depending on the trim level. The Si model gets a 205-horsepower 1.5-liter turbo four-pot. Topping the range is the wild Civic Type R with its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that pumps out 306 horsepower.

All versions of the 2019 Cruze sprint to 60 mph in a respectable 8.4 seconds. The base Civic hits 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. With the 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder, the sprint time falls to 7.2 seconds. The Si model’s version of the 1.5-liter engine sprints it to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. Opt for the range-topping Civic Type R and enjoy a class-crushing 5.2-second 0-to-60 time.
