Chevy Colorado Vs. Toyota Tacoma

Midsize pickup trucks give buyers truck capabilities with more manageable footprints in heavy traffic and tight spaces. Two masters of the midsize pickup realm are the 2019 Chevy Colorado and the 2019 Toyota Tacoma. Which is better for our Orange Park area truck buyers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Chevy Colorado arrived with a new look in 2015 and has since remained unchanged, save for a few packages that add extra style. This new look made the midsize pickup legitimately look like the baby bro of the full-size Silverado, pleasing truck buyers. Because the 2019 Colorado is available in so many trim levels, it ranges from a simple work truck in its base and WT models to a more premium-looking, commute-friendly rig in its LT and Z71 packages.

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma also carries a rugged pickup appearance with its blocky front end, hard body angles, and upright stance. Like the Colorado, this look is relatively new, as the Tacoma debuted back in 2016, but it has always been one of the more rugged-looking midsize pickups in the American market.

Both the 2019 Tacoma and 2019 Chevy Colorado have their respective off-road-ready models. In fact, the 2019 Toyota Tacoma has two in the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims. The 2019 Colorado has its ZR2 package for buyers looking to take the road less traveled. These off-road-friendly models show their credentials with heavier-duty shocks, higher ride heights, knobby tires, and more.

Interior

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma and 2019 Chevy Colorado are pickup trucks designed with value and utility in mind, so they both feature simple cabins in their base levels. But as you move up the trim levels, they both gain some style and luxury. In their respective off-road-ready models, they also gain unique cabins with special colors, stitching, and materials to set them apart.

The 2019 Colorado’s interior includes a larger dashboard, resulting in a lot of empty black space, but this also gives it room for larger 7- and 8-inch touchscreens. The 2019 Tacoma has a smaller dash, making everything a bit crowded, but its round air vents and splashes of color help set it apart.

The 2019 Colorado wins in every key measurable inside, including one of the most important for families: rear legroom.

Performance

The 2019 Colorado and 2019 Tacoma follow the same path in the powertrain department, mostly. They both include standard four-cylinder engines and optional V-6 units.

The standard engine in the 2019 Colorado is a 200-horsepower 2.5-liter four-pot. Buyers can opt for a 308-horsepower V-6 for improved performance and higher towing capacity. The 2019 Tacoma comes up short in both areas with its base 2.7-liter four-cylinder producing just 159 horsepower and its 3.5-liter V-6 topping out at 278 horsepower.

The 2019 Colorado takes it a step farther with its optional 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. This engine cranks out modest 186 horsepower, but its torque is through the roof at 369 pound-feet. This massive pulling ability gives the Colorado a 7,700-pound capacity, beating the Tacoma by at least 900 pounds. Plus, with it getting up to 30 mpg highway, the diesel-fueled Colorado is a great option for commuters.
