Jeep Compass Vs. Toyota RAV4

Crossovers are no longer just the soft-roading people haulers they once were. Today, models like the 2019 Jeep Compass and 2019 Toyota RAV4 offer the people-hauling abilities the masses require and trim levels that can handle more spirited off-road travel. Which of these people- and off-road-friendly crossovers if best for our Orange Park area buyers? Find out below.

Exterior

The second-generation Jeep Compass arrived in 2017 with a more refined look that closely resembles the latest take on the Grand Cherokee model up front. Around back, this stylish crossover adds a forward-slanted rear liftgate to put a sporty touch to help it remain competitive in the youth-focused compact crossover segment. This gives the Compass a delicate combination of sporty and classy that is sure to appeal to every buyer. And for those looking for something more rugged, there is an off-road-ready Trailhawk model.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is all-new. This redesigned crossover abandons the sporty wedge shape it featured in the previous generation in favor of a more upright and rugged look. This will make the RAV4 more palatable to older SUV fans than the previous model, expanding its fanbase. Further enhancing its marketability to SUV buyers is its off-road friendly Adventure trim. Sure, it is not as capable as the Compass Trailhawk, but it is better than most in its class.

The 2019 Jeep Compass has the added benefit of being significantly smaller than the RAV4 in almost every measurable. This not only makes it easier to park on your daily commute, but it also makes it easier to whip through the trails.

Measurement 2019 Jeep Compass 2019 Toyota RAV4 Difference

Advantage: 2019 Jeep Compass

  • Smaller footprint
  • Business up front, party in the rear design
  • Rugged-looking Trailhawk model

Advantage: 2019 Toyota RAV4

  • Latest design language
  • Sharp Limited trim

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Jeep Compass rocks a basic design with its monochrome color scheme and limited use of angles and smooth dashboard. It does, however, have plenty of upscale features, starting with its standard 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 115-volt power outlet, and more.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 boasts a sharp cabin with a thin dashboard, stubby gear shifter, setback air vents, two large HVAC knobs, a floating dashboard, and more. The 2019 RAV4 boasts loads of standard features, including a 7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay, but it oddly lacks Android Auto. Where the RAV4 comes back is safety, as it boasts all the goodies the IIHS likes to see, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, and automatic high-beam headlights.

In roominess, the RAV4 wins in all the areas that matter most, including legroom and cargo room. Keep in mind, though, this is the tradeoff for the Compass’ easier-to-manage footprint.

Performance

The 2019 Jeep Compass has a simple powertrain lineup that includes a single 180-horsepower 2.4-liter engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. Buyers can opt for a six-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive or a nine-speed auto with four-wheel drive. This delivers a 9.3-second 0-to-60 time

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 has a more complex powertrain lineup. Its standard powertrain is a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is available with front- or all-wheel drive and zips the RAV4 to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds.

The twist in the 2019 RAV4 lineup is its hybrid model that pairs a 2.5-liter engine to two electric motors for a combined 219 horsepower. Because one motor mounts to the rear axle, the RAV4 Hybrid is only available in all-wheel drive. The added torque from the electric motors pushes the RAV4 Hybrid to 60 mph in a respectable 7.5 seconds while earning up to 40 mpg combined.
